Polarization and Stokes Parameters Initial question: How can we measure astrophysical magnetic fields?

چکیده
where x̂ and ŷ are unit vectors in the x and y directions. Ask class: is there a unique way to define the x and y directions? No, in general there isn’t. That means that angles defined with respect to a specific choice of the axes are to some extent arbitrary. However, if one sticks with a particular definition of axes, the differences in angles between different sources can be meaningful. It’s an important distinction to make.

متن کاملProper integration time of polarization signals of internetwork regions using Sunrise/IMaX data
Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...
متن کاملMagnetic fields and polarization in AGN jets
In the literature there is now a wealth of images of AGN in both linear and circular polarization at milliarcsecond resolution of many sources at multiple epochs and wavelengths. This review is a broad overview of our current state of knowledge of the polarization properties of AGN jets, and of what we can infer about the structure of their magnetic fields and the distribution of Faraday rotati...
متن کاملPolarization from Aligned Atoms as a Diagnostics of Circumstellar, Agn and Interstellar Magnetic Fields: Ii. Atoms with Hyperfine Structure
We show that atomic alignment presents a reliable way to study topology of astrophysical magnetic fields. The effect of atomic alignment arises from modulation of the relative population of the sublevels of atomic ground state pumped by anisotropic radiation flux. As such aligned atoms precess in the external magnetic field and this affects the properties of the polarized radiation arising from...
متن کامل1 4 Ja n 19 99 Stokes parameters for light scattering from a Faraday - active sphere
We present an exact calculation for the scattering of light from a single sphere made of Faraday-active material, to first order in the external magnetic field. We use a recent expression for the T-matrix of a Mie scatterer in a magnetic field to compute the Stokes parameters in single scattering that describe completely flux and polarization of the scattered light.
